Trek Overview

The Satopanth Lake Trek is one of the most spiritually significant and visually dramatic high-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located above the holy town of Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas, Satopanth Lake sits at an altitude of 4,600 meters and is believed to be sacred in Hindu mythology.

“Satopanth” translates to Path of Truth. According to legends, the holy trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — meditated at the three corners of this triangular glacial lake. The trek is also associated with the epic Mahabharata, as it is believed that the Pandavas passed through this route on their final journey toward heaven (Swargarohini).

This trek is not just about mythology — it is a raw Himalayan adventure filled with glaciers, moraine trails, dramatic ridgelines, and towering peaks like:

  • Chaukhamba

  • Neelkanth

  • Balakun

    Detailed Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrival in Badrinath (3,100 m)

    • Reach Badrinath.

    • Check into guesthouse/hotel.

    • Visit Badrinath Temple in the evening.

    • Overnight stay in hotel.

    Day 2: Badrinath to Lakshmi Van (Approx. 9 km)

    • Trek begins along the Alaknanda River.

    • Cross Mana village (last Indian village near the Indo-Tibetan border).

    • Gradual ascent with scenic views.

    • Reach Lakshmi Van campsite.

    • Overnight camping.

    Day 3: Lakshmi Van to Chakrateertha (Approx. 8 km)

    • Trek through moraine and glacier sections.

    • Panoramic views of Chaukhamba massif.

    • Trail becomes challenging with boulder crossings.

    • Reach Chakrateertha campsite.

    • Overnight in tents.

    Day 4: Chakrateertha to Satopanth Lake (6 km)

    • Short but steep and demanding climb.

    • Reach the sacred Satopanth Lake.

    • Spend time exploring and soaking in views.

    • Return to Chakrateertha for overnight stay.

    Day 5: Chakrateertha to Lakshmi Van

    • Descend carefully through rocky terrain.

    • Enjoy changing landscapes on return.

    • Overnight camping at Lakshmi Van.

    Day 6: Lakshmi Van to Badrinath

    • Trek back to Badrinath.

    • Check into hotel.

    • Rest and relaxation.

    Day 7: Departure from Badrinath

    • Breakfast.

    • Departure with unforgettable Himalayan memories.
